I don't write with them, but I'll run them by them to see if they make sense, if it makes them laugh, or makes them think it's dumb.
Pro
Bounce lines/ideas off of them but almost never write with them.
i'm an AD and although my writer is responsible for the bulk of the headlines, i'll throw any that naturally come up during concepting under their list to take or leave
Depends on the partner. The best one I had - we couldn’t tell who do what in the end.

Whatever gets the job done. I sometimes text them images of doodles I make throughout the day. The. Sign off with “Check it out. Pretty cool, right! Consider us even.”
The trick is to keep doing that until they tell you to stop.
I help out occasionally but my partner always starts it and then I’ll throw some in or thought starters for inspo. Same for comps like they can’t actually comp but sometimes they’ll help me with swipe or give me an idea of what to comp
Sometimes my AD writes the headline and they’re great! I like to work on the tone for something that needs a script together, then I drink a bunch of wine, get emotional and churn out the script in an hour, alone… mostly in a dark room being weird and regretting life decisions.
As an ACD (art) I always write with my partner. Together and separately on most assets. But I love writing, and have often thought about going the CW route.
Back in the day, it was a team sport. Headline writing. These days it feels like I am working alone 90% of the time. But the plus is, I can work much faster that way. And I have AD chops as well so I can set type and sketch and craft and really get my ideas 75% of the way there before anyone sees them.
my ADs never give a shit so i do it alone
One art director scoffed at me when I asked him if he wanted to write a script, but I think that guy may literally not be alive anymore. Can’t find him online.

Wait! Are you confessing to a murder right now?
