Companies get cheap because someone's job requires them to justify costs, and going cheap on the coffee machine is an easy one for them. If they spend more on the coffee machine someone may question it. You could make the case that a superior coffee machine contributes to superior performance and that means more money coming in, but it may not be worth the trouble.

I wish there was a way to quantify what you're saying because I bet superior coffee does equal superior performance lol
At my old job we actually had cable in the lounge and everyone would eat lunch together and watch random shows or sports depending on the time of year. We had some consultant come in and he had it removed as he said it was a waste of money. I remember a couple of the VP's even said they were sure if we ask any 10 random guys in the office they would chip in to cover the cost but the decision to remove the cable was final. After that happened I noticed a lot of the people who would eat lunch together and hang out stopped all together. I always felt this was the beginning of the end of the tight unit that had been established.
I can say for certain they did not see it.

Honestly… it’s never just about the coffee machine. It’s the little signals. When a company downgrades something everyone uses daily, it can feel like a quiet message about priorities. Especially when it’s a relatively small expense in the grand scheme of things.

This is the kind of thing that keeps me away from small companies. You always hear something like this.
