I got a remote L6 SWE offer at Google but the RSUs are too low for that level ($625k over 4 years), could not negotiate it higher. I’ve accepted the offer but trying to be hopeful that I could make it more equitable in the future if I perform well. Hard question for others to answer. Honestly comes down with what you’re looking to get out of life. If you’re gonna be doing the work you love while having more time to spend with your friends and family, what’s 10%
U’d be Significantly more happier if it’s really what u want to do. N honestly, 10% lower won’t drastically change ur lift style but having that peace of mind and heart at the right place will certainly do.
10% to be happier? I am in the process of potentially doing just that. Highly recommend it
“Do what you love and you’ll never work another day in your life.”.. 10% is nothing compared to your mental health and well being.
Thanks everyone! Your input is really helpful!
Came from a non profit background, would go back to a non profit background in a second even with a pay cut 🤷♀️
If you don’t mind, what are reasons that you’d go back to non profit?
At SC not much of a pay cut, but the career trajectory is much steeper in consulting. In 5-10 years will you be okay with making a non profit exec salary vs director/partner $ in consulting? If you do leave, definitely be super nice about it and stay in touch in case you want to come back
Good point! A graceful exit will be necessary!
I would do it for even a 30% cut. Worked in non profit and the WLB is amazing plus impact is so much easier to see.
That’s true. I just found out the terrible health plan they offer will mean more like a 20-percent cut 😣
Would the non-profit role be something along the path you want to pursue long-term? That’s a more important consideration imo than the salary cut.
It is! Thank you; that’s helpful reframing
I would take, if its what you love doing and you will be much happier.. I would pay 10% cut any day to take a job i love and have a better WLB
go for what would actually make you happy to wake up in the mornings or even stay up late at nights. I would say stay to make it to M if possible...then rollout soon there after, just so your resume comes off a bit more polished. But if desision has to be made now...go with happiness, you'll figure out how to turn that into $$$
If you’re not burned out just yet, then I would take the M promo with the promo bonus and raise. I would use the time between now and then to save more aggressively so that you don’t feel the impact of the move quite as much. Also, I’d look into setting up some passive streams of income while you have more *presumably* disposable income.
10% cut from your SC salary or M salary (assuming you’ll get a raise with the promotion)?
From my current, SC, salary
I’d say wait until you make manager, then take the cut and move. Then if you do want to come back at a later date, you have the title and rank on your CV.
