We have a main door staff props open every am for kids who come on bus or walk. One person stands around the corner another usually helps but lately is not there. I’ve brought it up numerous time. AP came down once and of course 2 aids happened to be standing by door. I was told there was enough supervision etc…I asked why can’t someone just open door when kids come as it’s always in clumps…I was dismissed as we don’t have enough staff. Am I being paranoid? So frustrated and my room is close.

This happens at thousands of schools throughout the country. We have students (bus riders) that enter through the main doors and two other doors used for car riders. Doors at each are propped open during arrival and dismissal. There is absolutely no way someone could get into the school through any of these doors without being stopped by a staff member. We aren't directly by the doors, but no one can get to them without coming into close proximity to one of us.

Honestly, the students are more at risk during their time walking into or out of the building than they are from someone getting into the building.

My issue: when we’re at recess, we got nuttin! No plan

what kind of professional development does your district provide you?

How do we feel about sped aides constantly being on their phones when with students? It’s pervasive in our building and is driving me crazy. Yes there are down times but this is beyond that. Am I expecting too much as a fellow aide for everyone to be as engaged as I am?

I am in self-contained. Our students are never sent home even tho they are obviously ill. Only projectile vomiting sends a student home. So then we staff get sick because of our close contact, toileting, etc, and have to use our sick days and then run out of sick days. Anyone else experiencing this?

I am in a self-contained cross category room. Grades 2-4. We have kiddos who need to be placed in therapeutic schools but those schools are understaffed due to Covid — their staff found other jobs during the shutdown—and so can’t take them. We paras are in a cross-category self-contained autism/BD/LD/ED grades 2-4. We are hit, scratched, kicked. We are 6 adults and 10 kids. We work 8:30-3:30. Half hour lunch and no breaks. Is this typical? Short lunch and no breaks?
