That’s just Denver, it’s a sprawled out suburban type of “city”. You need a car and to be reliant on the I25 gods.
This happened in our very suburban neighborhood when my daughter was in high school. One bus out in the morning, one back in the evening. RTD said riders in our neighborhood were “too affluent” & no one would ride the bus, so they didn’t ever add to the schedule.
Hello RTD, what about teens? I called BS but zero changes.
RTD has been historically mismanaged. In 2004, voters approved a tax increase to fund light rail to the northwest suburbs / Boulder. They've collected more than $250M through this tax but took the money and used it for other projects, and now say they'll get to this particular project in 2050. FORTY SIX YEARS of paying this tax before we get anything (it was originally supposed to be done by 2008, but they literally haven't even started). I have no idea how this is legal but it sucks.

Still can’t believe there isn’t a train running north to south.
Opportunity is aplenty on this. We are working on a commuter incentive, ofcourse we already pay for RTD eco passes but we’re looking to go farther and incentive se those that ride their bikes, take public transport etc
If you haven’t already, Way to Go a program from DRCOG, offers helpful support in this area (waytogo.org)
You should have seen it in the 80s and 90s. Its come a loooooong way. If public transit is important to you, I’d recommend NYC (not Greenpoint) or Europe. Denver is coming along, you have to be patient.
I've hated for years how car dependent Denver is. It desperately needs something to connect the lightrail stops together (trams, streetcars, something) because the lightrail stops are way too far apart to be reliable. The city is set up perfectly for it (had a tram network in the 1900s) and the front range should have already had efficient passenger rail years ago.
This is one of the main reasons why I'm not sure I can do Denver long term.
Denver, like many cities, has been engineered to encourage driving because there is a higher rate of return per person for government.
When we all drive a separate car to a separate job, they layers of government keep increasing their “fees” because they can’t increase taxes without public backlash.

Dir1: do your neighbors know you wear a tin hat everyday, or do they think it is just today for Halloween?

Does anyone here know how to get involved with helping this effort from a volunteer aspect? I ride my bike everywhere and would love more protected bike lanes. I am also a big fan of increasing the public transportation options.
Downtown Denver Partnership. They have a leadership program and are focused on these kinds of issues.
Denver does not wanna become LA bud
Actually it could. We have all the water and the climate is idea for growth.
Unfortunately, that type of change would take years. Not saying it can’t happen, but it won’t happen unless a lot of things change and people see and understand a monetary benefit from such things.
CDOT and the state government have used the 'that'll take years' excuse for decades and if they would have started them when they started using that excuse to delay they'd be done by now.
I live south Denver by du taking the train to and from work - 17th and California was 👌
Glad I don’t have to do that commute anymore
Better side walks and Public transit would be awesome
Also, I think downtown Denver kinda sucks.
People can Sh** on RiNo but at least bars / restaurants walkable distance of each other .
Colorado is an amazing state , I honestly think the foothills is where it’s at 🤷♀️:)

OP: I assume you are fairly new to Denver. Denver made substantial investment in public transportation over the past 30 years. Over 100 miles of rail has been added for metropolitan public transportation over that time period to supplement a large bus system. The train has resulted in a very convenient way to get to Broncos, Nuggets, and Rockies games. It is also a good way for Airport employees to get to work. Very, very few professionals who can afford to drive choose public transportation. It simply is not convenient.
However, despite this enormous investment, as you have noted we are a very car dependent city. People want to compare us to coastal cities, when this is a horrible comparison. We are more like Dallas, Kansas City, St Louis or Phoenix than we are like a coastal metropolis. Further most people don’t move here looking for urban life (and if they do they are disappointed). Most people tolerate the urban life in order to live an active outdoor life. The outdoor life involves skiing, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, climbing amongst other activities. All of these outdoor activities require a vehicle to get to and from them.
Even more than in the city it would be awesome to see more public transport access to the mountains. The problem in part though as it would get more folks to the mountains but then new people would jump on the roads as they improve. I feel like people live here to get out of the city though so any improved access to that makes it a more attractive city to live in.
I wouldn’t say it has to be a long time. I think in each direction you could block the road for trucks for 2-3 hours 3 days per week. A total of 9 hours. Reality is the trucks get stuck in the traffic so it’s not efficient time for them anyway.
Agree with the point though that the problem is that it’s a federal decision and a CO problem. I think this is probably the core of the problem that makes any solutions pretty unlikely. But that’s bad for CO and especially the front range.
I don’t agree that buying a house in the mountains is a solution for more than a few folks. Well done buying a few years ago and having the income to support it VP1. Not everyone has that income and prices and costs have gone up so people don’t have the same entry point.
