1962. The Mad Men era.
I don’t know man. My personal experience has never lined up with “the market.” People say it’s bad, I get hit up by recruiters every other week. People say it’s great, crickets.
I miss the times when we would have only one interview and get a job offer. Not this shit of having to do 10 interviews concluding with an interview with the janitor.

2016-2019 were pretty good years
It was never EASY, but it feels like there’s been a fundamental breakdown in recruitment/hiring over the past few years. I think it’s a combination of the ubiquity of online job postings on LinkedIn and elsewhere, and companies leaning too hard on automated processes and AI to save money on hiring recruiters that are actually good at their jobs. Job seekers are so frustrated with the process they’ll apply to thousands of jobs, some of which aren’t great fits, but what the hell, can’t hurt, right?
So every single opening has like 500 applicants, nobody with enough time to competently review them, and a constantly fluctuating budget that might eliminate the job halfway through the process.
It used to be that even in a down market you could at least be sure SOMEONE was looking at your resume/book and making the decision. Today? It just feels like a lottery.
