This happened to me a couple months ago and I was being super upfront with management about why the change was happening. At the same time, I pushed them to stick to a clear plan so we weren’t constantly switching gears.. that kind of consistency makes a huge difference. In your situation, I would ramp up recruiting efforts right away, focusing on candidates who are open to hybrid or flexible setups from the start.

Curious if those employees got extra compensation for going into office if they were previously promised remote?
I definitely understand the choice to depart. Though I hope those leaving have their next role lined up already - it’s a tough market out there.
I agree with HC1 - start ramping up recruiting, focused on those who are willing to come in or be hybrid.
All you can really do is advocate for your employees, but ultimately the decision is up to upper management. If I were you, I would definitely communicate my frustrations and let them know the kind of workplace culture it's cultivating for you and the other employees to feel like your perspective and wishes aren't being heard.
How are the candidates wouldn’t they be employees? Also, I find it unusual that they are resigning within a week of wearing hybrid. How much notice did they have?
Condolences to the work change! I can’t blame the people that are leaving because it isn’t what they were told it would be. Especially going from remote to not, that’s a huge curveball in plans for them. I would make the point that the inconsistency will impact retainment and even hiring. Word gets out, people are less likely to come on unless they don’t have much choice out there.

totally agree with this. It's actually a huge lifestyle change with big impact.
People feel betrayed when what they were promised gets yanked away, so it makes total sense that they’re walking. And of course, the burden falls on whoever's left behind, which sounds like it’s you right now. Had a similar situation happen and I was left behind like you. I ended up being super honest with leadership about the pressure and burnout it was causing. I also started quietly reworking job descriptions to attract people who actually want hybrid.

Did you have to issue new contracts for this change?
