Welcome, underdogs. Let’s get down to brass tacks — what’s your underdog story, or maybe you’re still at the bottom of an uphill struggle?

One: I never knew it was “brass tacks” I always spelled out “tax” in my head. Thank god I never used that idiom in a brief. 😆

Two: I’m in the middle of an uphill struggle, and I have been in the middle for years. But, I started at the bottom. State school only 50th percentile, moved to new state where the market is saturated with lawyers, and was unemployed for an entire year, despite sending out resumes like it was a full time job tailoring those darn things.

But I volunteered as much as I could and practiced networking. When I finally got an offer it was my first offer and I took it right away. I spend the next few years forcing myself to learn everything and become an absolute expert in 1/3 the time it takes everyone else. Now 8 years out of law school, I’m middle management at my firm, and I FINALLY have an impressive resume and a pretty good salary, and I’m going to use that to leverage myself for an even better job, cuz the one I’m in now requires me to work 75 hrs a week.

First generation college grad, took bar in 2010, finally got a ‘dream job’ in 2018 that maybe justified my life choices and debt, laid off in May.

Second career in my late 30s. Couldn’t get an LSAT high enough for a top tier school. Put myself through law school by working during the day and going to school at night for four years. Struggled to pass the California bar. Opened my own practice and have been quite successful with my own practice despite others telling me that it wasn’t possible. Never had a desire to go to big law or work in a firm so that has turned out to be exactly what I wanted. And I think I’ll work from home until I retire.

What type of practice? Just curious.

Hey small agency friends with kids! Quick question. Our agency’s family health care is expensive (ranges from $1700/mon with normal deductible to $1100/mon with super high deductible). If anyone out there (at a small NYC agency) has a better plan and is comfortable sharing, would you mind telling me who your company uses? My kids’ college funds thank you!

I don't get the point of getting an MBA. I feel like there's nothing b-school can teach you that you can't teach yourself... and networking is feasible without the help of an overpriced university.

Hi everyone!
I currently work for Graybar Electric as a Project Specialist. Over the past few months, I’ve been training some of the new employees and it’s really inspired me to want to move into a operations training and development or a leadership position. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of room for growth where I’m at. I’m hoping to make new connections and see where this new endeavor takes me, if anyone would be so kind as to refer me. Here’s a picture of our family dog for some likes ❤️

Does anyone have a poor relationship with their alma mater? This can be in general or department specific. For example, I have always felt disappointed with career services from my law school. I feel struggling alumni, like those that failed the bar or remain unemployed long enough to be recorded as negative statistics for the school’s ranking, have already done their damage so they have no incentive to help you any further.

I would like to first commend the attorney for starting this bowl. I attended a T4 school and was stuck in doc review for years. However through networking, I made connections which gave me a chance to get my foot through the door. One I did I knew they would have to physically drag me out of that firm if they wanted me to leave. Now I’m a partner at a multi-state/national firm. I’m always looking for similarly situated young attorneys to mentor and help. Anyone out there feel free to pm me.

My fiancée almost lost her life to a medical emergency. The doctor needed me to stay home 2 weeks to supervise her post-operative care once the hospital discharged her. We had nobody near that could help so I got permission to attend class remotely for 2 weeks from the dean and all professors. One professor removed me from a graded argument the week after I’d return. When I asked about this error, he had said “I had planned on your failure to appear” and that he preplanned giving me a 0 grade.

Didn't have top grades, wasn't on law review. Worked at a midsize firm and was laid off in march-- have about 3 years experience in a hot practice area. Have been applying and had some interviews at larger shops but nothing has come of it. I'm still applying to roles (not many out there) in my area but coming to the realization based on number of larger firm rejection letter that I may not find a role. Where would you go from here if you were me? Was making good money at the midsize...
