That’s a good question OP. I think the toughest thing for me to explain is the gab from graduation and my first real legal job, which occurred for a number of reasons including bad planning in my part but also incredibly low grades that just really didn’t help in trying to land anywhere. I was also afraid I wouldn’t pass the bar fist time (though did) and so I put off getting a job right out of law school due to my fear of having to tell them I failed. Obviously I would do it differently if I had a do over but there you have it. Getting my first job took almost a year and it was brutal. I also just got whatever I could and although I didn’t want to to practice in that area I did until I could get out ( about a year later), but then I had to explain the drastic switch in practice areas without sounding like I had no direction. All in all I’ve had to really frame and take control of my own narrative in order to overcome these challenges, which all stemmed from poor law school grades and low ranking school to boot (though my school has a good regional reputation). Now many years out it’s better but that was a years long process to “narrate” for the sake of my future prospects.
If you can be or do anything in the world, what would it be? Worst question because obviously it wouldn’t be an associate at the firm I was applying to 😂
