Showing up at work a few days a week is not the end of the world. I promise. We all did it way back in ancient days of 2019. Do I want to? Heck no. I’ve built my world the past 4+ years around working remote. And I have a lengthy commute to offices. Kids and pets at home. All the things. It was always foolish to believe this would remain forever. Is it because of the new administration? Eh…that’s a little simplistic. That’s why everyone is freaking out and taking it seriously, but federal buildings sitting empty while a lot of workers barely do their jobs was just not sustainable. Federal workers and contractors are likely to still work remote a significant amount of time, I predict. We will see. But take heart—you can do this and it won’t be as catastrophic as you fear!
It’s a huge deal for folks who are aligned to offices in DC but don’t live near Metro, thanks to the DC Mayor’s idiotic law (passed in 2022) that prevents companies from including parking costs in their transit-reimbursement programs. The goal was to discourage traffic in the downtown core, but the actual effect prevents people from wanting to work downtown. I can’t afford to live near a Metro station, nor can I absorb $300/month in parking costs.
Yes, this is primarily because of the incoming administration. Agencies know that it’s only a matter of time before it’s some kind of mandate. They are getting ahead of the curve.
Assuming RTO definition probably for you more than others, start with getting your biological rhythm back in shape and scheduling around work obligations with the commute in mind. My cousin has a few sports centers he drives past while I get to enjoy other city luxuries. The remote mandate isn’t a mandate is it?
It’s absolutely because of incoming administration- most agencies have found that telework is extremely useful and popular, with no hit to productivity. Any RTO mandates from the last few years have absolutely come from various senior leadership more concerned with optics or vibes (or actively hoping people will quit)
I think another aspect is that leadership has been told “Fill the offices or your budgets will get slashed and your physical footprint deleted”. Rather than make a wise business decision, they opt to fill the offices
Yeah my place too bc of the incoming administration. Looking for new jobs.
