We're starting a new project, which I'm excited about because I don't like how the current one is going. I feel inadequate at my job and basically I feel useless. I just don't feel like I'm doing anything of value and haven't had any motivation. I want to take the lessons learned and make this new project a success.

My boss means well but tends to go 100mph and they'll get ahead of themselves...Cont'd in comments

We need brand new resources for the new project, since no one has bandwidth due to the current project. My boss went ahead and asked a peer to help out, which I didn't know they were going to do. Then we had an in-person meeting with my boss and this peer. At one point my boss was like wait, this isn't my decision, and they ask me in front of my peer if it's okay that the peer works on this project with me. Obviously I couldn't say no. But I really wanted to.

This person doesn't feel like a team player (they act like one but they don't move like one) and is so keen to do well to prove themself that I'm worried they'll just end up taking over. I really don't want to share this new project, but to maintain a decent working relationship I'm going to have to. I tend to be all in or all out. How do I navigate this? It sounds stupid but I don't want my boss to think this project went better because of this co-worker. I know this sounds petty. I just haven't been loving my job lately, so I was super excited for this project and now I'm not motivated at all.

The honest truth is you need to learn to say no. I have this similar issue where I feel guilty saying no to things like this and end up burnt out or in frustrating situations. We need to unlearn the idea that we can't say no. There are ways to say it that make it less confrontational, for example "Thank you for the offer but I have a solid grasp on the direction of this project and I'd like to take this on on my own as an opportunity for my own personal growth."

Hi there. First of all, I want to say that I'm sorry for the situation with your coworker and the boss putting them on the project with you. Did your boss express why they wanted to add this person onto the project with you?

My boss didn't say it outright, but based on what he said in general, he thinks I could use help with the people side of change management. He thinks this coworker could be helpful. Boss said that the coworker deals with difficult people on the daily. But I deal with the same people. And I've been doing it longer than the coworker.

I can definitely see how this it my fault. We're very blunt people so he's the only one I don't have to sugar coat things with so I'm very straight up about difficult people. But that doesn't mean I'm not good at it / don't like doing it. I guess I just got a little too comfortable and shared too many details

Secondly, where is that coming from when you say that you feel inadequate at your job and useless? What makes you think that way? It sounds like those larger feelings are central to your lack of motivation. None of us feel motivated to do something that we feel useless at. Could you take this project as a learning experience and open your mind to working together? I would tell your peer that you want to contribute and ask to devise a plan together. This is a situation to build confidence, and that's possible even alongside someone else. Especially along someone you will have to ask for what you need from - if that makes sense.

I'm used to leading the projects with my boss checking in and being a point of escalation. But in this current project they led it because we had overlapping projects and I had to finished up the previous one. So when I came to this project the handoff wasn't complete and my boss is still heavily involved, which is fine. But at the same time, it feels as though between my boss and the rest of the team, this complicated project is covered. I fill in the gaps and try to do what I normally would, but I feel like if I were to step away no one would feel much pressure. It almost feels like I've somehow become a systems administrator rather than a product manager. That's why I'm not feeling useful or motivated.

So the part about this coworker not being a team player makes me feel like it won't be simple to work together. From what I've seen, they run and tell my boss things instead of addressing concerns directly with people. So foresee issues where we come to a solution, but the coworker may still want it their way and they'll go tell my boss and my boss won't ask enough questions and will agree with the coworker. Essentially overruling my contribution to the solution. This is still supposed to be a project I lead, where the coworker can contribute, but I feel like based on recent behaviour, they're just going to try to take over.

But you're right, regardless I should still try to make it work.

I’ve been feeling this way as well and actively looking for other opportunities. May just leave even if I don’t have something lined up.

How's the search going?

I definitely don't feel like I get paid enough to deal with all of this. But up until recently I really liked my job. So I don't know if it's just the current circumstances that are the reason why I'm not motivated or if this feeling will continue no matter what.

Is your firm treating 12/26 and 12/27 as firm holiday since the 24th and the 25th are during the weekend this year? During interviews, how do you talk about the “result” or “impact” of a consulting project you were on? I know how to talk about the problem/recommendation portion of a sample project but the result/impact, I mean, as consultants we don’t see recommendations executed and actually generating results. So how do you talk about it?

When did you know your firm wasn't right for you? I'm not sure if it's just the stress of being a new attorney with a family or if my job isn't the right fit. I work in civil litigation and am consistently below my billables. I can't stay late because my kids need me and I can't work on the weekends because I have to maintain my house and take care of my kids. I'm being constantly told to work harder, stay later, etc but it's not practical. Or am I not approaching this with the right mindset?
