What are you all doing to solicit work from Partners since work is so slow? I’m very bored and not getting enough work (junior associate, may 2019 grad).

If your emails have gone unanswered, offer to write some client alerts or blog posts, and suggest some possible topics. Monitor the relevant regulators in your area (the research/library department can set up alerts for you), and let them know of any new developments that you can write about

All you need to do is send an email saying your have availability for projects if they need any assistance. Everyone gets slow and there is nothing wrong with it. What you associates do not see is that there are seniors and other partners reaching out to each other on assignments. At the end of the day, for associates, the firm cares about hours and not how you obtained said hours.

Depends on the culture of the group and how you guys usually get work. Also what practice group you’re in. This was me last week and then I got hit with a bunch of work Thursday - Sunday, basically teaching me when they have work, I will for sure be getting it. No one is hoarding work in my group so nothing has changed for us.

I’m making bread and trying to improve my Spanish. Fuck worrying about low billables right now - nobody at my firm has work.

Email/call. What else is there to do?

Got a tech degree or other skills that could translate into value?

Because you’re working in a law firm where every lawyer with low/no billables has a law degree. You’ll get further by learning to set yourself apart

Thanks everyone. For context, I’m in commercial Lit.

Are ppl worried about being on the bench esp when there aren’t a lot of projects in the pipeline? New hire here about to be up for staffing for the first time and sentiment at my firm seems to be worried/fearful about being unstaffed. Is it actually worrisome to be on the bench in this environment or is this just a product of highly ambitious over achievers worrying about not being constantly utilized?

Amazons excessive interviews are an awful candidate experience. Why do they think this will help them win top talent in this competitive environment? Especially with their public cultural issues…? Lots of great paying companies without having to take a day off from work to interview! It’s overkill

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?

I’m at a mid size transactional firm. I’m a total night owl and my partners have OK’d me starting the workday at around 11am because I regularly work until midnight or later. I get so much more done after dark! I still get some side eye from other associates, but 🤷🏽‍♀️

Does anyone else here have an unusual work schedule? Curious what adjustments you’ve made to make it work.

Q’s for hiring partners and recruiters - you know that most associates quit their managing attorneys and not the firm/case. I’m in that boat. What do I say to a prospective employer about the situation of why I want to jump ship?

Very brief background - I’m a senior associate who has been on one complex commercial litigation case for over a year. Over time, the relationships between attorneys on the case have deteriorated to the point that it is affecting my productivity/work. I want out.

Coming up on one full year at an ID firm. Feeling overwhelmed with my experience so far. I’ve received minimal training/feedback unless it was on something I messed up. It feels like the expectations don’t align with my level of experience. I have a case load of 45-55 with very little oversight or involvement from partners. Turnover is extremely high, as I’m the second longest tenured associate in the office. Looking for some guidance on whether this is the norm or not. Compensation is low 80’s.
