We’ve been told to chase success our whole lives—career, money, status—but why is it that so many ‘successful’ people are miserable?

Maybe we’ve confused happiness with success, thinking one automatically leads to the other. What if the key to happiness has nothing to do with money or status at all?

How would your life change if you stopped chasing society’s definition of success?

It’s an unfortunate byproduct of capitalism. A high percentage of Americans suffer because of it. Quality family time, relaxation, and shared community have gone by the wayside for much of the American population because we are taught to chase money at all costs. I think guaranteed universal Healthcare would go a long way toward countering the workaholic mindset. Every American has it in the back of their heads that a medical emergency could wipe out their savings.

I constantly took jobs (in advertising) that I thought would bring prestige and attention to my career, but it mostly just brought an insane amount of stress, less time at home with my family, and insecurities. I finally moved on from what I thought was ‘cool’ or ‘popular’ and found a job with nice people that understand work/life balance. It’s helped a lot. I’m not winning any awards but who really cares? My husband likes me a lot more and I get to have hobbies. That feels like success to me!

I’m on the production vendor side.

This! I worked at two renowned sweat shops and I looked around at leadership. People without families or close friends. People with families missing the important stuff. People cheating on their significant others. People desperately trying to look cool and young when they were neither. I hope somewhere this is not the case but it scared me enough to change my thinking.

The pursuit of money is empty. The pursuit of stability is survival. The pursuit of purpose is sanity. The pursuit of love is universal.

I don’t think successful people are any more miserable than unsuccessful people; I think many of us expect them to be less miserable, rather than expressing and dealing with misery in different (and usually more expensive) ways.

Hey all — feeling lost in the early stages of a probate case. Anyone have experience? I’m worried my uncle (executor) is taking advantage of me.

Just taking the opportunity to get current. Sober 3 years and 10 months. This past couple weeks have been stressful and my mind slipped into fantasizing about my drug of choice. Last week I flipped out at some of my wife's family. I did an amends and I think time will heal this one. It's all up to HP. Although I have neglected my morning practice this week, I'm practicing self compassion with positive self talk.

Hi. I have applied for a job in an academic setting for a leadership role in cancer research. Duties would have me responsible for a small team of research nurses as well as other managerial duties for the department. I have been a research nurse for 3 years now, but I have no experience applying for a salaried position or a role in leadership. What sort of salary would be appropriate to ask for? I know that I should aim high and let them counter, but how high exactly? Thanks I’m advance
