Yes. I would have gone into the practice area I most liked earlier. I would have also been better about choosing mentors and looking out for other opportunities.
Don’t be a lawyer.
This!
Take care of your existing relationships and build new ones. Sometimes your long term viability and opportunities seem more tied to who you know than what you know.
My first job was my first and only offer, but it wasn’t in my target geographic location. I felt like I had to take it because I hadn’t passed the bar yet, salary was higher than I thought I’d ever make in my life, and it was a good firm. If I could do it over again I would have tried to get to the city I wanted to be in sooner.
If you’re going to go a sweatshop in your career, do it earlier and build strong relationships, get the training and stable foundation. Then as you progress you go down in AmLaw rankings for better quality of life and you’ll be the total superstar with your background and reps. Or latch on to a real mentor who has power and your back. They will be the reason you make partner assuming you’re relatively decent at the job.
