What are some cool non-law exit options you’ve seen people take? I’m a mid-level funds lawyer who is daydreaming…

There may end up being many people following this looking for inspiration bc practically everyone is looking for cool non-law exit options (except the handful of true believers of course). Been looking for about 25 years…

Indeed. And golden handcuffs are real.

Sometimes I fantasize about quitting the corporate hell law grind and being a train driver for the LIRR (especially now given the recent strike). A lot of those guys are making well over $200k, generous pension, strong union protection, healthcare, well funded Railroad Retirement (instead of Social Security), and a super fun job seeing scenery all day and not having to care about work in the off time. I might do it next time they’re hiring if I burn out.

Prob not a dream job for most people but I think I eventually want to be a realtor.

Separately, I often wonder if people don’t respond on these threads (like, ever) because no one actually has left to do something cool or if the people doing cool things don’t follow these threads anymore. Everyone says a law degree is so useful but seems like that may not be so true in practice!!

It has really disheartened me and I feel I should be earning more money

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.
