It's not an intelligent modality or I guess I'd say its sub-optimal for exercise performance.
If you're going to be moving distances with a load, it's a sport-specific exercise and an imperative you don't do it your first time in the field. So, fine.
Any other scenario you should just lift weight or run. There's absolutely no reason to do that to your joints, tendons, and ligaments in the civilian world. Even if you want to prep for a backpacking trek, a sled push will generally create more adaptation than a ruck would with less stress on your body and nervous system.
And yes, there's benefits. Doing 1k push-ups has benefits. But benchpress with higher intensity is a better exercise if you want to get stronger without causing tendinitis.
I think it’s a lot of sustained stress on your joints that your body really doesn’t need outside of the military. I couldn’t speak to the motivations of people who do it - but I imagine it’s the same crowd that enjoys ultramarathons and trying to pop their heart.
Rucking was always a leisurely stroll for me even in the service. Wouldn’t be useful outside of outdoor enjoyment/hanging out with the fam. -thx 6’2 at the front of the formation

specifically the “largely useless” part, as opposed to Goruck’s ads about the benefits?
Some ppl swear by rucking, I really enjoyed it for a while. Especially when you live in a place where you can explore the outdoors. I also did a 50mile ruck while I was in and still enjoyed it. I don’t do it too much now but it’s also a lack of time
