What do people really mean when they say “use first principles thinking”?

I’ve googled it and still don’t get it, would appreciate if someone could explain their interpretation

Sometimes is can be useful to not use derived principles or goals as they may unnecessarily close off other worthwhile solutions.

For example, if you are following a principle “we need to maximise product A market penetration” you may miss out on other value adding things like developing a different product or refocussing product A on a more profitable but not larger market segment.

These additional solutions may be more obvious if you instead applied a very low level principle like “we need to make the most money”. That frees up your thinking from the assumptions embedded in more developed principles.

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH. There is talk of bringing everyone back to the office full time and that’s not what I would like to happen. I’ve been searching for a new position in which it would be a remote role. My current company also said I am maxed out in term of what they are willing to pay salary wise.

Five senior managers come overdressed

Seven senior consultants arrive in a sack
Eight associates sneak in the back
Nine analysts come to work
ALL THE CONSULTANTS GO BERSERK!!!

Ok, I'll show myself out now... 😂
