Go back to your inspirations, whatever they happen to be. Listen to an album you haven't listened to in ages. Or look at paintings that inspired you. Whatever it is that made you feel creative at some point, return to that well. If the whole crew feels stuck, do a field trip to a museum if that's what it takes.
One thing I’ve done that’s helped is splitting up the team for a project. The team was stagnant and uninspired, so I had to writer work with another art director on a project. I told them it was a resourcing issue, but it was really to give them a break from each other and see if they could get some inspiration and energy working with someone else. And it worked.
If possible focus on solving the cause of the slump, instead of short lived gestures affecting the symptoms. The team will appreciate that more.
I always consider it a good time for a team-building activity when I see my teams in a little bit of a slump. Almost always helps or at the least, gets the team back into a state of ease and it changes the general environment at work... and consequently leads to exactly the change I was hoping for. Might sound manipulative but in the end, it's true that humans need to shake out of their ways to come back to their senses sometimes.
Do you complain to your team? Best advice I've ever gotten was:
1. Tell your team that they can rise to any challenge and crush it bc that's what they were hired to do. Chosen for their talent and drive.
2. Never let them see the darkness in your heart.
And this means, never whine about the shit you're being given. Act excited to meet every issue your team faces, head on. Morale first. Whine to your spouse. Bitch to your bosses. Be impossibly positive in front of your team.
