Can tax lawyers in public accounting feasibly make to a move to IRS counsel? Also, would it be worth that move?

You might get more response to this in the Tax bowl. I’m very curious to see a discussion on this topic myself, because IRS attorney opportunities have always been interesting to me.

like

Yes. Know multiple people that made this move and are very glad they did

This happens all the time. Folks go to chief counsel. They aren’t always easy to get but they are good jobs that can open doors in the future. Pay isn’t the greatest but manageable.

like

Yes, I know someone from EY who did this.

The compensation opportunities after such a career are endless.

This isn’t entirely true. It’s those that get into Treasury and work on “popular” regs that end up walking away with seven figure offers.

I know people who did from my LLM program.

Definitely. It’s more common from the National Tax practice.

My professor is a counsel at the IRS and was trying to recruit me several times. It sounded like they were pretty understaffed.

I have an offer from a start-up which I will be joining next week. Even though I got a hike more than 100% ( current tc: 6lpa, new tc:14lpa) and changed to sde role I am still not satisfied. Seeing all those comp posts on leetcode I felt I can be one of them. But now I am feeling left behind and not able to move on. I know I have no dev experience. But every other person is getting tc more than 25. How can I get rid of this FOMO and focus on learning and growth. Drop your advice in comments sec.

SVP vs VP in banking.

I'm currently looking at two HRBP roles at two different titles/salary bands. This would at a large banking company located in NYC. Can anyone with banking industry experience share their perspectives and insights on the differentiation between the roles? I take it that VP is more of a junior role and a more commonly-used title. I have a friend that's a VP at JPM and has about the same YOE as me (shes not in HR). I have about 15 YOE but about 10 yrs HR YOE and 3 HRBP YOE.

I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

As a law student interested in going into the field I’ve seen a lot of negative comments saying that only lawyers who couldn’t get into big law go into PA. Although I know most people try to get into big law initially, it is very competitive and many don’t stay past 2-3 years. You certainly don’t make as much going into PA as a lawyer but the pay is certainly not bad and the WLB is generally much better.
