Approve my ideas instead theirs.
Lol. I wish I could, but their ideas are always so much better. 🙂
I’ve been fortunate to have worked into very talented CDs so far.
The best ones do all the same things:
- fight for the best work with accounts people and client
- fight for more time with the project manager
- is encouraging and ensures you leave each review with actionable next steps and clear direction
- prioritises making the teams ideas the best they can be before resorting to their own thoughts
- Cares as much about the people making the work than the work itself. This one is truly rare.
What they should do less off:
- speaking. Some CDs can speak in monologue format and literally not pause for 10-15 minutes. WTF
- imposing their own ideas upon teams. I always welcome a CDs idea and will always flesh one out, but in the first instance, their job is to DIRECT the ideas they’re given.
- being awful with technology. Get it together. It shows your age.
- being disrespectful of downtime. Most CDs aren’t like this, but some are.
The worst CD type by far is the panicky / flappable / emotional type that inadvertently ends up bullying everyone around them because they are permanently in a state of panic and worry and insecurity. This is the old guys with the fragile egos, but ALSO a fair few young female CDs. Don’t kill me for saying that. Just what I’ve seen.

Dislike- imposing their own ideas onto their team, expecting their team to work all of the time, micromanaging and boxing creatives into how they and only they like things
