Thought I'd share another leadership opportunity, this time for industry leaders in the Tech & Digital sector. Would love to connect with anyone who is a senior leader (MD / SVP) with deep experience in this sector alongside leadership experience in a TA / Growth or Client Relationship environment. Amazing opportunity to further establish and grow our presence with global leaders in Tech.

I definitely feel less comfortable than I used to, pre-pandemic.
We're confusing all crime with being dangerous, and it's skewing perceptions a bit. There is an increase in drug charges, but that doesn't always imply a threat to a person's life (outside of the individual who may likely have an addiction in need of treatment).
That said, perception is also a big factor. Certain areas of downtown I will absolutely avoid because I know better (intersection of Smithfield and Liberty, and most of Liberty in general, for examples) and have seen what goes down there.
I hate to be a "get off my lawn" person, but the large influx of teens is unfortunately causing a lot of headaches and problems for people and businesses downtown. I have no solution to it because it runs deeper than "get them involved with after school activities."
I love what downtown has to offer. We have some amazing restaurants and theatre over on Penn Ave and I love spending time over there. And I hope there comes a solution that appeases everyone.
I've also noticed the same uptick, and it deeply concerns me. There is just so little oversight in new builds, so we end up with "luxury" everything and no new affordable housing (don't even get me started on the severe lack of tenant's rights; I just learned how much more protection tenants have in NYC and it's wild how behind we are).
Once we pair the housing issue with our current economic state, we're bound to have more people who are unhoused setting up tents along Grant Street and the North Side.
For what it’s worth, I lived downtown ten years ago and loved it. I would not do the same today.
The pandemic changed everything. I lived and worked downtown until the end of 2019 and it was great. Still work downtown, and putting aside the actual crime increase, there is a definite feeling of it being unsafe--it's very common to be accosted by panhandlers or random shady people. With the empty storefronts (and the ones that aren't empty are selling shitty jewelry, liquor, etc.), way fewer commuters, and the human feces/urine, I've never felt more like moving from this great city.
ETA: my understanding is also that PPS have a couple of schools downtown now and that it is causing a major problem.
It's both I think. There has been a little bit more crime compared to before the pandemic, and I hardly ever see cops downtown now. But it's also true that local media makes money off of scaring suburbanites who haven't stepped foot in downtown since 2019.
I don’t necessarily think there has been a surge in crime. It’s more nuisance type behavior that just makes you uncomfortable. I don’t recall ever seeing someone peeing in the street downtown pre-Covid, but that’s a constant now post-Covid.
