I'm just curious because many people at Deloitte were staffed on projects but laid off - so what happens if your own service line wants you gone - do they reach out to the Partner on the project you're on for approval? Also what if they disagree or even clash?

This is purely a hypothetical scenario - just curious as to how this would play out politically.
No hope there. Happened to my team early this year. Project partner tried hard to keep that guy but was only able to buy him time till end of that SOW.
OP: don't know how different it's at Deloitte, but here you want to make sure the partners in the group you're going to have signed on to your transfer then make sure the partners in your current group are okay with it. Gotta play it politically.

Observed this exact occurrence with a BA. Was in an impromptu discussion with Talent, our SM, and PPD to attest to his peformance, which was fine on our project.
RSLL made the decision and PPD couldn't overturn it, despite going to bat for him. He was out in three weeks. No opportunity for transfer in such a short window.
In my opinion, RSLLs were forced to cut quickly and with general metrics. They dont care so much in maintaining project continuity as they do in getting staff off their books.

Would being staffed on a project with another service line be the reason your service line wants to lay you off? I'm wondering that in case I should avoid projects that are not in my service line

I changed service lines recently but not due to anything layoff related. It was a four month process where the Partner that wanted me had to clear it with his service line PPD, and then that PPD had a gentle convo with my service line PPD who was like "who? suuuure." Three months later the paperwork was in my inbox.
