Pre owned luxury sure can be a money pit. My buddy needed to change the brakes on his M5, it turned out to be $3k to get them done. I was looking at an E class, and it was nice, but I decided to save the heartache and get an Accord instead. A higher trim level Accord or Camry really isn't that big a step down in luxury from a 3 series, but it is a huge step down in total cost to own.
BCG1 nailed it. As a former car guy, nice cars are overrated unless you've got the money to not care. I tried to make that same argument to my gf who just bought a CPO C300.
Your budget is probably already stretched thin living in the Bay Area. Get yourself one of those nice 2 series.
1999 Honda Civic coupe, with the bells and whistles... never look back.... it will literally run forever.
I bought a CPO Porsche, put on nearly 80k miles over 3 years with no real unexpected costs and love it dearly. Then again I'm a gear head so I wouldn't have been happy not owning a car that I didn't feel I could play with and make my own. If you're shooting for function however, I'd prob recommend lease or Uber
Find the cheapest lease offer and be flexible with opfions. Don't waste time and money on CPO
From a total cost over ~10 years standpoint I think the rule of thumb is: ownNewJap<leaseNewGerm<ownCPOGerm<ownNewGerm

You're gonna think I'm nuts but I was paying $250/mo ($0 down) for a Mazda 6. Have since moved on to a CPO 3 series and it's a money pit

@k1 by options do you mean car options, feature options, or lease term options?
