What is a good premium for a lateral transfer? A competitor offers me $20k, which is ok but only translates into 15% pay bump and I feel asking for more is unrealistic.

15% is a reasonable bump, but it depends on what you are looking for. If solely going for the money, I’d push for more. Does mentioning your current salary ever help? Worry it’ll box you in, but it could help show why you need what you need.

Honestly, that is a pretty good bump for a lateral transfer. If it is with the same company, I would probably take it. If it is at a different company, I would need a bigger bump to make that transition.

I would consider moving companies for a 15% pay bump, especially for a lateral move. Of course, I will need to compare the new place to my current place, and see what the differences are. Like # of days in office vs remote, commute time to and from office, benefits, and the job itself.

I’m job hunting in Los Angeles, looking at a variety of titles (HRBP, Sr. HRBP, Manager, Sr. Manager, Director). I have 8 YOE and my SHRM-SCP. I reached my report limit on payscale.com, so I used a variety of other sites to price the roles (BLS, salary.com, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Robert Half). How do you get good at thinking on your feet? I find I always need time to think and analyse before being able to answer client queries (even those that are considered simple by others). I don't want to rush and get it wrong. I avoid phone calls for this reason which isn't great when you're in the service industry so it's starting to impact my career.
