Like everything else in fitness (and in life), it just takes time! You're on the right track with doing half-pushups. If you're already doing a good number of them, you could consider having a gym buddy (or yourself if you can manage it) place a weight plate on your back to make them more difficult and continue building the necessary muscles. You can also look at other exercises that will help strengthen your chest, like flys or plate loaded machine presses. Focusing on triceps will help too, although it's more of a chest exercise than a triceps exercise.
Don’t get discouraged. it’s totally possible! It’s all about building up your upper body and core strength. Start by focusing on your chest, triceps, and shoulders with exercises like modified push-ups, planks, or chest presses. Gradually lower the incline of your push-ups and work your way up! You've got this!
I struggled for years with this exact problem. Consistency and patience. You'll build the necessary strength to perform a full push-up by systematically progressing through your knee push-ups. Just increase the number of reps and pay attention to the muscles you are using. Also, practice lowering yourself up and down from a plank to strengthen the muscles you need to do a push-up.
Have you tried modifying using a resistance band? If not, give it a try and see if it helps. When I wanted to get better at pushups, I focused on building chest strength and using the resistance band modification. Eventually I was able to do a few pushups on my toes, but as soon as I stopped focusing on those things I lost my pushup strength.😭
