Your options are very limited without further education if you want to practice law in the United States. Licensure to practice law in the US is done at the state level. I believe New York allows some foreign attorneys to sit for the bar exam, but I think it depends on which country and the substance of its legal education. I also know that one can earn their law license in Virginia and California by working as an apprentice under an attorney and meeting other requirements.
Without an American law degree it’s nearly impossible. An LLM on an international degree still won’t cut it unfortunately, and if you choose to take the NY bar on the international law degree, you’ll be limited to working there only for the most part. It’s just really tough without the American J.D.
