it's like the time I was in jury duty and the prosecutor said that the defendant also "was in unlawful possession of cocaine and heroin." A juror asked "Is there lawful possession of cocaine and heroin?"

It's my understanding that the IRS does not consult with the authorities for any activities reported. That said, I would be vague in reporting the illegal activities, but definitely report the income (and qualified expenses :)
