Shoot your shot!
If anything, I’d try for a LMM role at a firm where you can get FaceTime with some of the senior bankers and actually get an interview/build rapport with someone who makes hiring decisions.
You can always yeet your resume at the internal recruiters at large banks, but it ends up being a lot of work for likely a lot of rejection/ignoring. But still, do it. Who knows??
You have no one at PwC who’s taken you under their wing? No friends that are more senior than you that could point you towards some coffee chats or events where you could mingle with people in your city who work in IB? Shamelessly promote yourself and ask for help, bud. This is an industry of people who are usually vapid and self concerned. You have to wake them up a little and make them pay attention. Try to go to CFA dinners/events with your local CFA society chapter (not the best direct way to senior IB bankers, but all the PWM, asset mgmt and buyside guys know them).
I went to a target school, left to pursue a girl and surf, and then went BACK to a non-target a few years later. Just to finish an undergrad. I got a spot at a MM in my town and now I’m moving to a role on WS. Sure, I’m no VP at Goldman Sachs, but you can do it. Just push hard and be interesting and someone will eventually give you a shot. (Or go to a target MBA program and crush the competition and you’re a shoe-in, but that’s a lot of money).
jk i asked you for way too much help. I will figure it out LOL.
honestly tho, thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it
Whats the worst that’ll happen, you don’t get an offer? And if anything, once you have a YOE try making an I herbal transfer to Transaction advisory services with PWC to pivot to IB
i’m currently in Deals so it’s not impossible. Thank you for the motivation everyone 🥺
Moving from pwc deals to IB is doable. Why are you doing a masters and in what?
It doesn’t hurt to try applying to IB now but it’s off cycle so I’d probably focus on the networking side vs filling out a bunch of apps, esp if coming from a non target. That being said, a CPA and some FDD experience is a decent resume to break in later
i only included that background info bc i don’t have the network to just go into IB & I didn’t have the money to go to a great private school. Huge loans weren’t an option b/c its expected of me to help my family when I start working. I’ve been working since I was 13 years old to put myself through college & never really had too much free time because I pushed myself to graduate early to save money. I admit that I didn’t utilize any extra time that i had properly to research jobs; instead i used it to spend time with friends.
My parents told me a job was just a job. My ambition to get to the top didn’t kick in until my junior year of college til I came to the realization that this was the start of my career.
tldr: Should I even try applying with a rlly good cover letter or would that waste my time
Never hurts to try. Worst case scenario is they say no and you end up in the same place you’re at right now.
True deals is an option, not a ton, but some will do it with enough networking and right place right time. Alternative is always MBA route, which I was in a similar boat as you and ended up doing. Lose the shot at PE of course, but I didn’t want to wait around for 3+ years before becoming a first year analyst
I would suggest trying to engage in various women in banking groups and/or cold-emailing senior female bankers that have lead positions in these groups.
I think your story seems solid and supportive of the type of person who would do really well in banking, and I have seen less interested people receiving support from these groups/leaders because they connected directly with “the right person”.
I don’t agree with shameless self-promoting—I think people see through that, especially when you are an intern. Reach out to people in areas you are interested in and tell your story.
Side note: If anyone reading this is feeling bad for me, please don’t bc i really hate pity. I am not a three legged dog. I know I’ll get to the top of the corp ladder one day. Just had a few financial barriers earlier in life but I’ll make it. Dw.
