What’s something you’ve unlearned as an adult that you thought was completely true growing up?

Mine would be realizing how evil some people can be. I definitely grew up in a butterfly, rainbow, and unicorn world.

What about you?

The American Dream is BS. Go to college! (no matter the debt) You'll get a good paying job (doing"what you love" so it "doesn't feel like work")! (Yeah, right!?) Get married! (without going to therapy first means guaranteed relationship success!) Buy a house! (more debt! unless pre-2020) Have kids! (wash and repeat)

Now that one hits hard! Hopefully in time it will circle back but right now it's a tough reality!

I agree. I won't say I grew up in a butterfly, unicorn world but I definitely did not realize how mean some humans can be to other humans. It's actually unbelievable. I think that's why I have always been honest with my kids about stuff. At least they won't be shocked by the world.

Well, now mine feels kind of silly, but I thought house flies only lived a few days. Turns out it’s more like a month. It is a tough thing to learn that a lot of people out there are just terrible.

Wait!? I had no idea!

Oh, I know that feeling all too well. On one hand, I appreciate my parents keeping me sheltered from the "real world" as long as they did. But on the other hand, it was such a rude awakening when reality slapped me in the face. My entire adulthood has been a series of unlearning if I'm being real.

It is so much relearning! Do you have a specific example?

Offering advice to job seekers who go around recruiters and message hiring teams, execs, etc. You are putting the Recruiters job in danger. If a Recruiter declines you or doesn’t choose to reach out, it is because the hiring team declined you, or you don’t have the experience. You will most likely not be considered for future roles because of this. When I see people giving advice to reach outside the Recruiter, it’s bad advice. Very rare is this a good idea.

I currently work in Private (GA) Aviation & have for some time (about 12 years) I’m currently making the switch to the Department of Aviation and am unsure if I should ditch my current job (in private) and go full force with the DOA & embrace this new opportunity educationally and gather as much experience as I can or keep both jobs even though I’d be working 80hr weeks.. I love the private world but am really ready to move up. I don’t know what I should do. Any suggestions?

I work through a contractor, and was hired 2yrs ago to be a Systems Test Engineer II. They decided last minute to make me a Software Content Manager, but kept my title as is since it was supposed to be a 6mo rotation. I’m still an SCM, and am taking on leadership roles in the group. How do I ask for a title change and pay increase to reflect what I actually do? Do I ask my contract house, or my NASA mgmt? Should I ask to make the pay retroactive since I was hired to do one thing, but do another?

This might be a long shot but I'm looking for a volunteer who is trying to break into a federal career. Maybe a transitioning veteran, recent grad, or career-changer.

The single session is all I'm asking but could certainly turn into a longer lasting coaching relationship (at no cost), if you like.
