That everyone in finance is loaded. Don't get me wrong, some definitely are. But we're not all living in Manhattan penthouses and working for hedge funds.

There is (rightly so) a stereotype with finance folks. However, there are so many smart, down to earth people I've worked with.
A big misconception I run into is that I'll meet people who assume all I know, or care about, is finance. I happen to know lots of other things! I've got hobbies, I read a lot of books, I'm not only aware of flashing numbers on a screen.

Exactly! People think we just live in spreadsheets, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The best finance folks I know are like internal consultants and they connect the dots, challenge ideas, and help shape strategy. The numbers are just the starting point.
Depends on the type of finance - this doesn’t sound like a capital markets professional. Most finance is numbers, as an institutional investor, the world is a set of numbers and probabilities. Secondarily, story telling and communication is key. As someone who’s been in HFs for over a decade, everyone is a quant or has a PhD in a quant field.
If you’re referring to some corporate finance job - not investments, but more of an extended accounting role - sure, maybe they’re just consultants and not in the numbers as much.

Misconception? That somehow we're all rich since we work with money. lol
