What’s the future look like for us? Are we dinosaurs? Will AI and a bunch of juniors take over? Or does Gen X in consulting still have a chance (recognizing that spell check just tried to chance Gen X to Gen Z, for real…)

This is like a thread from people that have never used AI.

Speaking as a Gen-xer with a pretty solid gen-x story of abandonment and having to do every damn thing in my life on my own and the hard way, I have a degree of resiliency and ingenuity that I don’t see in younger generations (and, frankly, many of my peers). When you finish raising yourself and have no family to lean on, no one can take over. Good luck out there

We must be siblings… abandoned and neglected Gen Xer here

As a Partner, you will be firing all the Gen X and Gen Z employees because they are just numbers on your profit and loss statement. Get that bonus, Partner!

Nah, juniors are in trouble. It actually may be a golden era for middle agers. But only if you learn AI

Companies will just stop hiring us entirely and move to AI. Unless we offer an AI better than their AI. But since everybody in this business hoards their knowledge until they are let go. There is no way to train our own AI.

Doubtful they’d still have to type or talk to the thing. A lot of clients don’t even want to do that little.

Computers don’t sell work, people do. There will be a lot fewer people required to be consultants but selling is not going to be taken over by AI anytime soon.

Juniors are in trouble. Their roles are being replaced by AI. I think we have another 5-10 years before the consulting profession dies. Find a client you align with and join them to be their in house transformation team - because AI will eliminate the need for externals.

Juniors will tend bars. Gen X will mik consulting before it dies

I give it another 10-15 more years being pretty safe - and then I retire!

Gen X has to phase out and make way to Gen Z one day. That’s true for everything whether it’s IT or sports or any other work. So chill!!

Agree, the boomers need to GTFO and stop mucking about

When negotiating Salary, do you mention Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, or a separate source? Or neither?? Looking at a role I’m currently a candidate for and the discrepancy of pay between Glassdoor and Levels.fyi is absurd (IE Glassdoor average salary is almost 40K higher than Levels.fyi) Glassdoor also has more “data points”, for lack of a better term, than Levels.fyi for this role.

How do you get leverage as an internal transfer? A buddy of mine with similar experience and location received an external offer for nearly $100k TC more than my internal offer for the same role. I haven’t accepted it yet, and I’ve already caused a stir in my previous org. Should I accept an offer I’m already bitter about? Is my only recourse to now leave the company? Leaving would hurt both my previous org and new org.
