It sounds like you’re in a tough spot, but trust your instincts! If the company’s leadership and control deficiencies are as bad as they seem, it’s not worth staying for a bonus. Leaving early won’t hurt your future prospects as much as staying in a toxic environment will, in my honest opinion. Employers respect someone who knows when to walk away!
Just to add some more color, the control environment is so bad that there are major fixed assets from 2022 and 23 that were not even put on the books yet for 24. They also don’t even review journal entries before someone post them, only after whenever someone posts an energy, if that. I’ve tried suggesting some improvements but get pushback that it’s year end now and they’ll deal with it in 3 months once year end process and audit is finished. Whenever I bring up issues to the CFO or controller, they only ask what is the impact of the P&L, they don’t really care about the overall accounting process and internal controls. Everyone on the team also always has to be put in ““ busy work jobs” by the controller that accomplish nothing. There’s also major communication issues which leads to constant re-work
When you interviewed, what did they like about your background. What did they say to you? I would guess you were brought in to help fix the place. I would sit down with the CFO and understand what their expectations of you are now that you have been there for several weeks, ask for a30 day check in. See if there is an opportunity to help put new policies and procedures and make improvements. I assume it’s a private company and they may have hired you to show that they are doing something. Turning a company around will get you good kudos on your resume. However if the answers are not what you need then jump ship.
I think you need to ask what the expectations are of you and how can you add the most value in their opinion. If I was asked that question as CFO, I would turn it around, especially to someone with your background to get your thoughts. How they respond these questions can be just as telling.
Bruh leave if you way, at the end of the day you have to do what best for you. If the culture isn’t a good fit and the people/company aren’t there to invest in you then no reason to stay. I’m leaving my new role after 3 company’s given the toxic culture and the fund admin place doesn’t invest in their people. Always remember you can’t stay at a place where you can’t grow
Let’s say I give my 2 week notice and they fire me only me off on the spot to save the 2 weeks pay for the firm.
I think this is yours to fix and with the controller. There is no way leadership don’t want controls fixed given that it can keep them awake.
I agree with this comment. They brought on a B4 auditor to help fix the situation. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and kick doors down. You have the power as the big shot coming in! Have confidence in yourself. This will only make you a better leader and maybe get you up the ranks there and then leave to a better job if you want to.
Idea what they are doing. It’s only been three weeks but I feel like I’m going to eventually want to leave anyways. Is it okay for me to leave now or within a month or should I just wait it out until next December when my 15k bonus hits to leave? My mentor and recruiter both say if I leave soon it wouldn’t matter but if I wait say 3 months that is way worse. It seems like hiring is picking up now and I regret taking his job as it was my first one offered
Chief
It's obvious, you leave. Thus job will not help you in any way and could hurt you by association. Leave it off the resume too.
Ah these clowns are the ones posting the 100k salary controller jobs lmao
Lol was 150k plus 15k bonus. 8 years of experience in MCOL
Today was a bad day. Spent a whole day sitting in on meetings trying to figure out why the previous person in my role didn’t properly record accruals or payables for an entire year. The controller never actually reviewed their work even though they were supposed to. Also on some PPE stuff I’ve been working on found out that no one in the company reviewed the fixed asset register to place stuff in service that they bought in 2022. It’s like I almost trust none of the data that is given to me but just have to roll with it. A total headache and chaos that I unfortunately don’t think is going away anytime soon.
He funny thing is in the CFO head they think it’s the person who does AP’s fault, when in reality the controller is supposed to be training and supervising them. The AP person isn’t a full accountant
Run
I think if you have a good reason for it then it’s fine.
Is this a publicly traded company? My advice depends on that
I don't think you need to explain yourself...leave. You can sugar coat it and say I have an opportunity I cant pass up. Be gracious but you dont owe them anything
In a similar situation, just following this thread. You’re not alone.
I agree with CPA 1 above, I would definitely be looking for something else and I wouldn't even put it on your resume. Those do seem like red flags to me which is a good reason to leave a place.
You're the auditor. I don't understand why you don't just make the journal entries. How material are the mistatements and control deficiencies? Did they have to pay penalties? Is there theft? The rest, is on them. If there's fraud, don't sign anything. Let the controller do it.
The recruiter who placed me at this role I felt like peer pressured me a bit as well. They just reached out to me to ask to catch up how the new job is going. I don’t want to work with them again but feel like I should at least give them a quick call back. Should I be honest and tell them how it’s going or no? I feel like if I’m honest they’re just going to try to spin it in a positive way and try to keep me there. I’m interviewing in two days for a new job - should I let the recruiter know if or when I am leaving this job? I don’t think they get their bonus if I leave before 90 days but I don’t care about that
Yes, be honest wit the recruiter and let them know what’s gong on. And yes, they will try to spin it a positive by saying you need more time to get adjusted to the role or something else to make you stay longer so they can get their commission. No, don’t tell anyone and Keep interviewing for new jobs. At the end of the catch your career and needs come before the recruiters bonus or any firm
Quick update here: Just found out today that some of the correcting misstatement entries for last years audit weren’t even posted in time and instead were posted after the financials were issued…..as well as a bunch of other entries
