I think that doing marketing for luxury items would be interesting if that is considered to be a smaller market

Oops. I should have phrased that differently, I meant geographically. I spent most of my career in Chicago and recently moved back to my hometown in upstate NY. It’s easy to to Chicago and NYC but I was curious how much others consider location as part of their employment decisions
Like Austin or SLC maybe

Honestly? Market size matters less than market access — can you reach your audience, test your ideas, and get paid competitively for it?
That said, smaller markets come with real trade-offs: compressed salary bands, fewer companies competing for your skills, and limited upward mobility without relocating. If you're in a top 20 metro, you likely have options. Drop below that and you're often looking at remote roles to stay competitive on comp.
The real question isn't market size — it's whether the local economy values what you do. A strong regional healthcare system or university town can pay surprisingly well. A small market with no major employers in your space will cap you fast.
What's driving the question — relocation, remote flexibility, or something else?
About a midsized city or small town. Less competition but enough prospects so businesses can get to personally know me
