Taken into a room (out of nowhere) by my CD (who I didn’t really gel with) who proceeded to ask how I was doing and then tell me that I’d made a few errors over the previous 6 months (that nobody had ever told me about until right then) and that I was going on a PIP. I quit a few days later 😂
You still got a raise? Damn, go you. I’ve been called great and gotten shit, I think that’s just as bad to my pocket’s emotions 🤷♂️
I was told I excel on “sexy” projects but I don’t put as much effort into writing emails and brochures.
Mine was when my CD simply handed me a page-long essay outlining all my failures. I clearly remember the phrase “lacks talent and creativity.” Then he asked if I had any questions. I brought up some of my successes and projects he’d been happy with. But that essay he wrote was already read by the CEO and my measly raise decided on.
Was told I was performing several levels above my title, but still wouldn’t be getting a raise or title bump
Blindsided by a first time CD who focused solely on “that one time” I did something completely unrelated to my performance despite me and my partner running several of his accounts while he bought shoes online. He was subsequently kicked off of the account and I never got a raise or promotion. Pure poison.
My CD and I didn’t like each other and my reviews went from excellent to awful real quick.
OP, that's rough! This CD clearly has his head up his arse. Talk about a shitty leader! I hope his ECD wrote him a little essay saying he sucks at giving feedback. What's up with so many CDs sucking at leading for creativity? Feels like we are promoting the wrong people.
The problem is bigger than “promoting the wrong people” into leadership, it’s that our chosen industry sucks at taking the time to train creative people to actually be leaders. That’s not a skill we’re all just born with. Also, don’t be a dick CD either!
My former ECD told me that maybe it was time to start questioning whether advertising is what I was truly passionate about and willing to dedicate all my waking (and non waking) hours to, or if I wanted a family and an easier life. So that was cool...
