Hey, that's awesome. I had a similar story. I was told that the top candidate took the job but then they eventually backed out and the company offered it to me. But by that time I had already found something making even more money than they were offering, so it was pretty satisfying to turn them down.
Don’t overthink. If it’s a good offer and I like it, I’ll accept it regardless if I am first or 2nd choice, it doesn’t matter to me. If I have a better one, I’ll politely decline, and move on. If it’s yours, it’s yours, if not, move on. Its simple 😂
There was this girl in high school . . .
She offered you the job in the end?
I had a friend who was laid off from Biglaw during the great recession. He was turned down at all sorts of jobs including at many big firms. He ended up opening his own firm in a niche area, built his practice to something very enviable, and was offered department head jobs at several firms that had previously rejected him. He turned them all down and seemed pretty satisfied about it.
Kudos to your friend!
I was passed over for a baby associate position at a MidLaw, because they were looking for someone with a few years more experience. Ignore the fact that a few years earlier was a huge sector slump, so I can’t imagine new associates were hired that class year, but sure. Six months later I’m across the table from my interviewer as the bright and eager baby associate for a boutique. He was still looking for that “few years more experience” associate.
Finalist but ultimately passed over for a role at a company that ended up having big SEC scandal months later. CEO fired, everyone on the team left, stock tanked to pennies.
Wow bullet dodged!!

Not sure if this one counts, but I remembered one time that we had to call our 2nd choice after the top candidate withdraw and it was great actually, he is still with us after a few years
I referred my friend for a position. He finished second. The guy that got the job accepted a last minute counteroffer and did not show up on his first day. They offered it to my friend. We talked and he said he was concerned that he was the second choice. I told him he is the first choice now. Took the job and retired after about 10 years.
I finished second at what I thought was a great job. The company went into chapter 11. I would have lost about 5 years. I call it the best rejection I ever had.
