We are overly addicted to cars.
A5; it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more cars, the more highways and parking lots are needed. The more cars, the less incentive there is to be upwards rather than outwards. All of this creates an environment where cars create their own need by expanding land use, making pedestrian-friendly communities difficult.
It’s extremely expensive to own a car, costing thousands in ownership, gas, insurance, maintenance, etc., making it difficult for the poor in our city to find transport. They want a new job? They are stuck with those in their area. Want to go to the grocery store rather than buy the junk food at the gas station? It’ll take you hours.
Not to mention the air pollution, traffic deaths, GHG emissions, wasted time in traffic, many billions of dollars spent on roads, etc.
As to your question: it is tough for an individual to make this type of change—policy choices ultimately need to be made by governments. We need rail lines and buses, we need walkable neighborhoods like the Heights, etc.
For everyone claiming there’s “nothing to do”, I recommend searching on Eventbrite…download the app, Meetup app, CultureMap website, PaperCity Mag website (if you’re really bougie and appreciate the finer things) and click through Visit Houston tourist website. I discovered these sites years ago when I was bored and looking to find new and interesting events.

M1, I’ve lived in Houston most of my life and there’s an "outdoor season”. It’s typically between the months of Oct to mid May. Anytime later on and your daytime outdoor activities schedule must change or you’ll risk heat exhaustion, Amazon style mosquitoes, Jurassic T-rex 🦖 wasps and general malaise of extreme heat/humidity. I remember a local meteorologist said Spring/ summer schedule is leave out before 11am (which is pushing it) or after 7pm.
Horrible city with no nature, awful music scene (unless u are into Latin or hip-hop) , ugly and obese people. There, i said it. 😎

I never understood the fascination with BBQ. It’s overrated
The worst part of Houston is the dementors.
It’s plagued by gang culture.
Just because tacos are from a truck or taqueria, doesn't make them automatically good. In fact, most are bad. Also, cheap and unhygienic taco trucks shouldn't be praised as "more authentic". That's just a racist notion that Mexicans are incapable of managing a well-run operation.
Nothing much to do in the city
Local government is worse than useless. Communities and places of worship do significantly more for Houstonians than the worthless mayor and city departments.
This is Texas. Communities and churches are expected to the safety net, regardless of how shoddy a job they actually do.
The Heights isn’t really “walkable”.
Rising Star
It’s boring people (and not a boring city) that give the reputation that there’s “not a lot to do”
What do you do for fun?
It’s oily
Tax's are to high driving good people out city and county leadership is a joke. Tax revenue is spent unwisely and city is dirty. Houston the up and coming Detroit
Congrats on the name calling and stellar grammar!
Sprawl is a feature, not a bug.
Actually, @EY, I find them taxing.
What is this about Houston? The animosity lol
Kolaches aren’t that great.
Kolache shoppe is decent but chain or stand alone it’s all about finding a kitchen that does them well. There’s not much uniformity despite the simplicity.
It punches below its weight, culturally. Tired of seeing bands and comedians with tour schedules that put them in New Orleans on Thursday and Austin on Friday.
The Astros cheated and deserve the asterisk. I know other teams did it too but they didn’t win the World Series with it and got caught.
^ This!
Houstonians are the worst drivers in the world. And I hate knowing that most of those bad drivers are probably armed.
Rising Star
I agree with the last part lol, bad drivers and gun culture is a deadly combo.
Worst drivers though? I’d say Parisian drivers are also bad in the sense that they completely ignore established traffic law whenever it suits them
I was in an Uber in Paris where the driver went the opposite direction on a one way street for around a mile
Another Uber driver had a expletive filled conversation with a pedestrian who was legally crossing a crosswalk. The driver proceeded to curse at him for five minutes
Music is either salsa or hip hop. So much for cultural diversity.
Radio? Club? Live events? Maybe it’s where you are going?
