When account is put up for review and the agency repitches, have you ever seen them win?

yes - but at a huge cost to the agency (and staff) either in the form of reduced pricing or over investment.

This is generally how a successful repitch goes. You have to become “the new agency”, and it is expensive.

like

Yes, but it usually means an expectation to deliver more for less which translates to reduced staff and increased pressure load on the remaining team members.

When I was on client side, yes. We loved our AOR. They'd been with us for 15 years and they did good work. But the CEO believed she owed it to the company to put it out to bid. Eventually they lost the account but only after the rockstar AE left.

like

Yes it’s called “defending”. I had the good fortune to have my agency’s approach and results validated over 10+ years defending the biz at our largest account at least 3 times. There’s the elements of skills, luck, timing and opportunity simultaneously at play.

I’ve seen it go both ways but if the incumbent has reached a tipping point and the client has lost confidence it’s never easy to convince them otherwise… someone from your c suite needs to have a frank convo with the client to signal they’re willing to make changes - and do some serious listening. Sometimes companies run thru an rfp tp browse but ultimately it validates the agency they have in place.

Very rarely.

I used to work at an agency that did a lot of work for the state and they had procurement laws that said every three years they had to put accounts up for review and get at least three bids. There was one account that continuously went back to the same agency over and over again. And then one year I worked my ass off to change that and we won the account. I left the agency a year and a half later. The agency only held on to it for three years and then it went back to the previous shop.

like

Yes. Some reviews are mandatory even though the client and agency get along great.

like

It depends. Some clients have to do reviews on a set schedule. I once had a 9 year client I had to defend every 3 years and kept winning. But every time they beat you down in cost.

like

Apparently the success rate of repitches is about 20%.

like

Happened plenty of times when we pitched and the client simply ended up just staying with their incumbent. Usually it’s just a scam to get their existing shops to wake up, or give work away for free.

like

Incumbents usually lose unless it’s framed as a purchasing led review which means the incumbent needs to “buy” the business to win it.

RFP all agencies

Exactly

Yeah I was a part of one that won but it was longstanding so they repitched it several times throughout the years. What saved us this time was campaign numbers were good

Sometimes it’s procurement driven and a required exercise every 3 years or so, and not a reflection on the work or relationship.

Any help would be appreciated.
