When discussing salary with the recruiter, they clearly stated that they didn’t have any wiggle room in the budget and left it at that. However, I was scrolling through the company’s job openings on LinkedIn and the EXACT position I’m interviewing for is listed with a salary of $8k more than the recruiter offered me. What the hell? I don’t know if the recruiter was lying or if the LinkedIn post is incorrect. What should I do now?

Recruiter will act like they didn’t know… then tell you it’s a mistake

The loophole that companies have started using ever since they were forced to put salary ranges on job posts is to either add a ridiculous range (e.g. 80k - 200k for a mid level position) or to add the CYA line that pay is commensurate to experience and they can adjust at any time. It's all loopholes to try and attract talent then bait and switch. The safe assumption is the lowest number in the range is actually what the offer is.

In any case, companies who do this leave a bad taste in one's mouth. Proceed with caution.

I don't think they're legally obligated to tell the truth on LinkedIn

I’ve interviewed for a job where the recruiter told me the cap was $10k less than the range on the job listing. They said for legal reasons they have to put a certain range but the job listing not always accurate. Whether they were telling the truth or not, I’ll never know but could be a similar situation to yours.

No it’s not. There’s always a disclaimer on the listing saying they have a right to modify compensation at any time.

I was recently told that they never hire people at the top of the range for the position because then there is no room for merit increase once in the position….

Decide if the opportunity is worth it to you at the current capped salary or not. If not, then walk away. If it is, then accept and move on. $10k may feel like a lot but over the longevity of a career in advertising, looking back on my own experiences, it wasn’t worth the haggling.

Go around the recruiter! Wait until you speak with the department manager or hr manager and discuss the salary.

Talk to the recruiter and ask them. Sometimes if they don’t post the $, LinkedIn makes an assumption for them. So triple check that the comp is listed from the role itself and not an estimated amount from LinkedIn. Regardless, it’s totally appropriate to ask - and then ask the recruiter how they decide where a candidate falls within the range. They should have a formula or system to determine low vs mid vs high.

Recruiter takes a cut for finding people, LinkedIn applications don’t. They’re probably covering for their fee.

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.
