Forget about the grid, it just makes better sense. The school year start has crept closer and closer to July, and kids are getting out mid May. Move the year closer to start Labor Day and get out after Memorial Day. Also take out the fall break - we only need thanksgiving and Christmas.
What school in Austin gets a fall break?
I hate to be the old fart who says, "When I was going to school, I had to walk barefoot in the snow 10 miles uphill -- both ways," but I probably am. I actually started school in Austin at Rosedale Elementary and remember the Labor Day starts. Labor Day in Austin is still too damn hot to go to school. Now my kids start school in early August. A friend of mine sends her kids to a private school and they start in late July. Meanwhile, the schools are closed for holidays for a week for Easter, a week for Thanksgiving, at least two weeks for Christmas and then an assortment of one-day holidays throughout the year. We had two days for Easter, two days for Thanksgiving, a two weeks for Christmas (basically Christmas Eve to Jan. 2). The kids spend half the school year reviewing what they were taught prior to the last week-long break. Is it any wonder our educational performance stats suck rotten eggs?

They did this years ago, but they allowed schools to ask for sn exemption, so now they almost all do. You have competing interests.
1. Working parents who like shorter summers.
2. Parents who like all those 3 day weekends during the school year for their mini vacations. 2 to 3 weeks at Christmas, a week at Thanksgiving and a Spring Break
3. Camps who want a longer summer, ski and beach resorts that like Spring Break.
4. Teachers who like all the holidays, half days and " in service days".
Meanwhile kid learn much better without the breaks. The basics of learning is the repetition of facts and action. There is no longer a contiguous month the entire school year where kids are in class.
Since the function of schools is supposedly to teach children, the school year should be setup to optimize that end. So start after Labor day ( eliminates football in August heat - which is crazy!), cut out all the long breaks. Back to a week at Christmas, Friday after Thanksgiving.... and when did anyone K -12 start getting Spring Break? And you can easily finish by Memorial Day.
