Wow. McKinsey, which has the biggest public sector presence of the MBB, really hasn't been doing too hot at all in the sector.
Its presence is tiny and it's gotten even smaller. Meanwhile it's bungling whatever opportunities it's getting.

Apply one level up – if you've been doing the work for two years, you're already qualified. New employers care about capabilities, not your current title.
Prove director-level work in interviews: talk about strategy you've driven, teams you've influenced (even without direct reports), budget/P&L ownership, cross-functional leadership. Quantify business impact, not just task completion.
The dirty secret: companies promote externally faster than internally. Your current employer dangles promotions to keep you producing at higher levels for lower pay. Someone else will give you the title and salary your company won't.
I always level but you’re right that it can be difficult to convince a new employer you’re capable of the new challenge without any evidence

Thanks. Would it ever bee appropriate to claim you have the experience and claim a less senior role in your current company has more responsibility?
Level up, but I agree it can be difficult

Thanks. Any tips on closing that gap? Or experience to share
I usually look at the ones at my level, but I’d suggest reaching out to people at the companies you’re applying to that are in the same positions you’re looking for and ask them what you should do to show you can work at their level on your resume and during interviews
@Manager Oh, I see! Yeah, reaching out to new people doesn’t guarantee an instant connection these days now that more people they don’t know reach out. I guess maybe a general post on LinkedIn tagging the company and asking others if they’re available to chat or know someone who is?
