Latinx - help! We used this term in our diversity spotlight discussing Hispanic Heritage Month. One individual said that in English a group of Latinos would just be Latins to be gender neutral. I understand the word is controversial but is “Latins” grammatically correct? I assume we should just say Latin Americans, but trying to understand if Latins is also accurate.

I would not use “Latins”. I prefer Latino. I do not like LatinX, but I understand the place it takes for gender non-conforming folks so I’m indifferent to it. “Latine” is another option, gender neutral.

Also, recall that Hispanic and Latino are not the same thing.

like

Latins is incorrect, are they maybe trying to say “Latine” as a gender-neutral word?

smart

Latinx, like Filipinx, is kind of controversial and I’ve noticed from folks overseas that it seems to be an American thing and hasn’t caught on as much in any other area. A lot of people dislike the words because it doesn’t translate well into the languages- the ‘x’ is used in some circles for inclusion in English in words like folx and womxn, but doesn’t have the same meaning in Spanish or Tagalog. Maybe something along the lines of “Individuals of Latin heritage/background” would be more inclusive?

Thinking about moving to LA from NY. Is influencer culture as big in LA as it seems? I love the culture and the diversity of thought in the people and culture in NY (of course I’m probably biased). LA has the space and weather I’m looking for but the thing that holds me back is that I’m slightly afraid of LA being consumed by influencer culture. I love the diversity of thought in NY. Is it really like that there or is it just an outside view?

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.

I don’t want to seem disingenuous or that we are singling out our diverse employees (asking for photos). We have a remote and on-site workforce about 350+ EEs. My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.
