When would it be appropriate to go to HR about a salary evaluation after not getting a bonus for two years but getting expanded responsibility consistently…

Never. You go to HR of another company and sign an offer letter for a better pay at a new job.

HR exists to protect the company from its employees. Not the other way around.

It may be tough to hear, but it is not HRs role to see that people get raises. Although most companies give cost of living raises not all do and it is not a requirement. I used to work for one firm where the only way to get a raise was to move within the company.

Time to leave. You owe no company loyalty esp if you aren’t treated well.

First step is to talk to your manager, not HR. At the same time, look for another job, you need leverage if you want to negotiate.

I wouldn't go to HR with that conversation, I would go to my manager and then they can go to HR. And if your manager is not willing to give you a raise then its time to start looking for something new. Nobody wants to be at a place where they aren't getting raises.

What do you think would happen if you went to HR? Do you think they would talk to your manager and tell them to hike your pay or cut your responsibilities? If so, how do you think your manager would feel to be told that? Do you think they would think highly of you?

Talk with your manager. They are the ones responsible for both your job responsibilities and, with some limitations, your compensation. Once you do that, you can decide your next steps, which could include looking for a new job. It doesn’t sound like you have a great relationship with your manager, so that probably will be your next course of action.

The bank wants people to leave hence the reason that many lines of business are not giving raises or any bonuses. It's been at least three years with no raise and a dwindling bonus for me with plenty of additional work, stress and 10+ hour days. It's time to move on.

I was hired with the understanding that after one year of being an RB I would be promoted to Business Banker or Loan Officer due to my prior experience as a loan officer. After one year came they said maybe the next year despite being featured in the local employee spotlight, having perfect 10 surveys for almost a year. I left asap. I would start applying now for higher paying positions and use your expereince to your benefit. You may want to consider Credit Unions if you plan to stay in banking I've heard they treat people better but of course research the company thoroughly.

Yep

Lets all say this together “HR is there for your employer, not you!” Speak to your manager/boss about bonuses and prepare to leave before then

HR at your new job for doing the onboarding stuff at the new company maybe.

yesterday. rather, tomorrow after you land a new job at a better company that appreciates you

If you can talk to your manager that would be good, so what could be available to get you where you want to be. If you can see that conversation isn’t going anywhere, then it is hard to do much else. It’s never a bad time to look around and see what kind of salaries are out there.

Never

Never. HR will do nothing.

Never about pay and bonuses. Most likely, the HR Manager isn't receiving one either! When you have to speak about pay, it's time to make your exit strategy. Non-payment of bonuses could mean your performance is not what you think it is or they haven't told employees they aren't paying out... it is at the company's discretion as it stated in your offer letter in fine print. In any case, HR would never be your go to. Instead, ask your manager how you can improve and create a plan if they stopped the payout or understand your company may have canceled them for that year due to financial performance. Go in with a softer approach without being accusatory or anxious. Otherwise, look for new work while still employed, It's hard out here for the unemployed!!

Good question

Anyone have advice for advancing in your current role? My co-worker was hired in at manager level but somehow “proved” he was actually doing director level work and got a title promotion and salary increase in less than a year. I also went above and beyond my job as well (covering for him for a month while he was away on paternity leave) while taking on other projects outside of my job title and got zip—no raise or recognition. Any advice would be appreciated!
