A lot of times the person that gets elevated this quickly makes it clear this is what they want to their manager. Their manager is also a strong supporter of this in the rooms that matter. I’ve found these two things to be must haves.
How you ask is also important but it does first start with you making sure you are performing at that higher level - not that you are ready to, but that you actually are without question. I would ask people more senior than you for their opinion here and if you have someone trusted to also give you their opinion. A lot of times we think we are doing a level above work but really aren’t yet. Their opinion will also matter as they’ll be asked to assess you if a promotion were to happen.
Afterwards, it’s a conversation with your boss that leads with proof of performance and a clear path and timeline of what you expect. “I would like to be considered for xx role within xxx timeframe. To get there, I would like to build a path forward with you because I know I am ready for that accelerated step.”
You don’t get what you don’t ask for! Start making a case for yourself, speaking with your manager about your growth path, etc. Make it known how you’d like to progress, what new work you’ve taken on, etc and come up with a plan together on how to accomplish.
