When you come up with the original concept, and they are given to more senior people in the agency to build out because “that’s how this agency works”, how do you get work to put in your book?

If you came up with the concept, just put the finished work in your book.

Ok, first off, that’s bullshit your agency works that way. You absolutely should be included, even if you’re not leading it. So, that being said, couple of things you can do. First off, ask if there are any extensions of the idea you are senior enough to work on - do they need social extensions? Stunts? Banners, even? Keep yourself on the larger project team if you can. If not, when the work is produced, and they’re doing press or awards submissions, fight to get your name on the credits as an AD, and put it in your book. If they won’t even do that, then go ahead and put it in your book anyway, but be prepared to tell the truth about what happened if you interview for a new job. If you can get some documentation that the idea originated with you, like an email chain discussing it, so much the better.

like

If the concept is clearly yours, you should ask to be included in the making.

Being told I’m too junior to be included.

like

That’s not right, others may lead but you should have a role. Now if you make social posts and they make a film, you’d have to present it accordingly. Also if the concept was let’s sell our sneakers with the line just do it and make heroes of all kinds of athletes for doing their thing, that’s a big idea. If the concept was there’s an influencer in our clients field, let’s do something with her, that’s not ownable.

like

If you asked and they need to move on with the idea, because pressure and they know how to make it better, let them do it. But if you don’t feel that they could give the work a better justice than you would, have a discussion including the person in charge who assigned them and if you are able to convince them you might have a shot. But be careful what you wished for. You better soak up the pressure and bring it home, or go home and stay there for good. If you let them do it and they really are going to bring it to the next level and if they don’t eventually include you in the credit, that’s when you kick up a fuss about it.

like

If your concept is being handed off to a more experienced senior team to produce, you should be included so that you can learn and gain some experience for next time. If your agency won’t give you the opportunity to grow, you need to look ahead to what’s next. Your career will be stunted if you never get to produce work. Can you ask your agency if you’ll be able to gain production experience down the line/soon and clarify if you’ll be brought in on a project if so, or if you’ll need to sell in another idea first?

like

Put the final product in your book or just share what you actually did. This will happen everywhere, 100s of hands, thoughts and ideas will go touch the piece before it even goes out. And once the client gets their two cents in.... you’ll be glad you shared exactly what you started out with, because most likely that’s not what’s going out

like

It’s not senior teams, it’s ACDs and CDs are making the work. Im not included in the process, and then at the very end I work on some build outs like banners or a social post

I waffled between more experienced and more senior and left both. Didn’t mean a senior team.

If you feel like you can’t grow where you are, you owe it to yourself to look for another job. What reason did they give about why you couldn’t be involved during the production process?

I’ve never worked at an agency where a team didn’t get to produce their own idea (aside from occasional scheduling conflicts) or at least take part in it to learn if they were very junior.

When I had an idea that I wasn't able to work on through finish, I'd put the tissue or early concept in my book next to the finished ad/reel/whatever. Then in the interview, I explain my role in coming up with the idea, what the original vision was, and just let the interviewer know that while the concept continued to evolve without me for whatever reason, I'm still incredibly proud of the big idea.

Same deal with concepts that are mutilated by clients. Show the finished work, but also show the amazing original idea.

My book is just spec and side projects. I’m trying to get a new junior-to-mid role because I’ve gotten nothing good produced where I’m at, and I have zero faith this will change if I stick around.

I’m asked for work samples from recruiters and CDs even though I make clear that what I’ve done doesn’t reflect who I am as a creative. Think CRM/DM/B2B stuff. They insist on it, and I never hear back afterwards.

Not sure what to do. Almost feel like I’d be better off erasing my agency experience.
