Just make sure the spec looks and feels professional. Recruiters usually can’t tell the difference anyways. If you don’t have a good AD it might make sense to pay a designer to spruce things up a bit.
If you DM me your book I’m happy to take a look and give you some more specific advice.
I second this. I still have 2 spec pieces in my book. No one can tell the difference when they are well art directed.

Can you show some unproduced work behind a password? Often the side projects show potential, and the boring produced work shows you can do the nuts and bolts stuff.

If you’d like, I’d be happy to take a look at what you have and let you know what to share. Showing the dead ideas you love isn’t a bad idea. Sometimes I’m just looking to see if you can write a headline + body copy, and know the process of producing work, so the client stuff could still have some value.
