Lead as you would like to be led.
Own your mistakes and be open to learning.
You have a magic window of being new to the company for the first six months so I would use it to your advantage while you get comfortable.
You don’t have to know everything, but also remember that you were hired for a reason and have valuable knowledge and experience. When in doubt:
- ask questions
- trust your gut
Good luck and great things
One of the biggest changes from Sr. Manger to Director is taking a bigger ownership role in planning and results. You will be expected to understand how todays actions impact not only the current quarter, but also next year and potentially beyond.
You will need to be decisive, able to make important decisions without floating everything up the line. You will have to learn when to say yes or no quickly to tactical decisions, and when to take your time to consider the impact of a big decision.
You will be expected to lead by example and be proactive. You are the link between senior leadership and tactical employees, so knowing how to translate up and down is critical to earning the trust of both sides.
In terms of skills to work on, communication (written and verbal) is critical. Can you look at a large scale campaign being driven by a team of several people, and communicate what’s happening and why it matters in 1-2 sentences? (Example: “Competitor A is eating our lunch the past 12 months. This new campaign will sow seeds of doubt about their “differentiators” and value prop, helping our sales team improve win rate and shorten sales cycles by Q1 of next year.”)
None of this is easy and it won’t happen overnight. Be patient, accomplish milestones one at a time that work towards the bigger goals, and most importantly, be consistent in what you say and do each day.
Good luck and congrats!
