I think a lot of it is just tradition, it's always been prestigious to have an Oscar winning film. And a lot of people still take it seriously. In terms of box office, sure, another superhero movie may make more money. Having an Oscar winner can pay off in other ways, such as opening up opportunities. Oscar winners can be bankable, well, until they aren't for whatever reason.
True there’s the history of the awards there, can make you look more like a “serious” company if you have an Oscar contender/winner.
The idea of having “Oscar-winner” is extremely beneficial and I think could lead to greater funding for future movies (whether they be your blockbusters or not).
You’ll find small indie directors make a $1M movie and once they win an Oscar, they get the funding to really make that $10M + movie, I think studios like someone that will work with them again and again too.
That’s true I guess a small award winner could become a lucrative director in the future for the right studio.
