They get more and more jaded as they move up the chain of command. Further from the people they were supposed to be supporting. There are decent leaders and managers, but they are very much few and far between.
What seems to happen is that people move up the ladder and things become more impersonal to them. They're seeing people more as cogs in a machine, and the numbers take precedence over people. Good managers don't do that, I should note, but a lot of people seem to fall into that trap. And it does tend to push good people away.
Hit the nail on the head. The people who get promoted are rarely the ones who are actually good with people. They're just the ones who hit their numbers and sucked up to the right bosses.

You’re not wrong—so many leaders forget that people *are* the reason the numbers move. When advocacy disappears, burnout and turnover follow. Managers like you, who actually care about their teams, are exactly what organizations need—but unfortunately not everyone keeps that mindset as they move up.

It’s disheartening to see. They claim they care and have good company culture, but when you refuse to do what needs to be done to take care of the ppl they have. We are literally the ones who make it happen EVERYDAY …

I wouldn’t say you care about the team less but your priorities and focus become different. As I’ve moved up I can see how people perceived me but I still care for my team. But at the end of the day there is a business that needs to be ran.
