Why do recruiters cold call? Why don’t they just email?

I hated getting email blasts as an associate and I valued the few recruiters I would keep in touch with over the years because they knew my practice area well and has some good insight. This is why I call and basically never email, I know the juniors hate it but the seniors and partners mind it less (and that is where I typically focus).

funny

To be unique.

I think the issue is that every recruiter has the same jobs and can email. You can only differentiate yourself by what you know (which can only be shown over the phone). An email back and forth just isn't effective in showing why you are unique.

Just out of curiosity, how many calls do you get vs. emails per day/week?

like

Because firms know how to block recruiters email addresses.

like

Then LinkedIn

higher engagement rates. And if they emailed more you’d be here asking the same question in reverse order.

It will be okay. Just say no thank or maybe start a relationship.

Reminder: you will in fact leave your firm one day (and most likely won’t make partner at your current firm if starting as 1st year)

No.
Phone calls interrupted my work during busy hours
I can always review emails

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

The partners are pretty great and feedback is constructive which I’m grateful for, but I’m so desperate for a compliment I’ve been saving any scrap of positivity in a folder 😭 it’s December 22 and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping because I don’t feel capable of thinking about it. I need a hug.

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?
