Hey I would say you are doing way better than other people back in India (at least that’s where I come from and relate my progression) so first thing: stop thinking low about yourself and your skills. Staying in the US for 4.5 yrs and getting know their culture itself is a great value add. I was just counseled by my mentor in office as I was on the same boat. I think the problem is we think too much. Here is what he suggested me and am passing to you -
1. You are young enough to take control of your own situation. Remove the US job security fear as the first thing. Worst thing worst, you can be employed anywhere. US dream and money/ quality of etc. are all relative and is a never ending trap. So stop thinking too much about your job as the first thing
2. NOW is the time to critically think about what you want to learn. People talk about growth trajectory and career progression but it’s okay to be simple and just focus on what you need now
3. Relax and intentionally cut yourself from all distractions at least for few minutes everyday to think objectively about what’s the cause of your anxiety and list that down
4. Lastly, think on how can you address those areas thats causing you the anxiety and then without fearing of future take what all can be done to address it.
P.S. I am 30, married and doing good in my current career but am now taking a bold step of quitting my US job and help my wife finding a job in India so that both of us can be happy and start a family ... sorry for the long note but I hope this helps!
I’m 28. 4.5 years of work ex. Not found anything that makes me jump out of the bed and makes me feel like I am delivering anything of value. I have no skills and stuck in my current role.
C1, you are god sent. I truly believe that. I so needed to read this. Thank you for taking the time to post this 🙂😢
You’re already top of the bunch with American exp as C1 pointed. It’s an extremely valuable skill set. The green card stuff was always beyond us , it goes up and down. I’ve been here long to see that. Just be patient, and who knows it may get better. In 2008 GC was down to 2 years once!so stay optimistic , enjoy and travel as much as you can! It’ll balance on its own
Trust me - it is hard for us to evaluate our skills; we always feel undermined. However, put in a situation - we will think differently and execute differently when compared with folks outside of the big 4. Do not worry, you will thrive anywhere. The big 4 does not hire anyone and everyone; they see potential and hire individuals with skills that can be scaled. Honestly, they nurture leaders .
You got this OP
Hey, I don't think you're ruining your life. Are you feeling lonely? Are you not sure if you'll reach success in the way you want? Post a burner if you'd like to talk more. You're not alone, and having doubts is normal.
Like A1 said post your burner. We could talk it out
OP I am in the exact same boat. You're not alone :(
What’s your age and for how long you have been here OP? No judging but trying to answer accordingly.
C2 I mean. I took a screen shot of your response. Will probably be reading it often.
No problem OP. Glad that I could be of some help! 🙂
Thanks guys for all your responses. Gives me hope
